When sheep grazing on the rolling green hills of Ireland spark an amazing new adventure in central Maine.

It started many years ago while on a trip to Ireland, when the seed of an amazing and unexpected idea took root. That seed required seven years to nurture and grow into what is now Healy Heritage Farm. The mission of this farm is to regenerate historic Maine land back to sustainable, nutritious, pastureland that will support a flock of wooly sheep, while honoring the surname of my Irish immigrant ancestors, the Healys, who came to this country in the 1850s to make a new life in farming.

This dream of a sheep farm was realized in the spring of 2022 when, after a lot of research and work, a small flock of Romney and Leicester Longwool sheep came to live on our little plot of land in central Maine.

We chose Romneys because they are a mid-sized sheep that will bond with people that spend time with them. Their uniform fleece in white, natural (black), or moorit (brown) is incredibly versatile and is sought after by fiber enthusiasts everywhere. Their semi-lustrous locks can be processed into soft yet sturdy yarn and felt.

The Leicester Longwool is a breed that nearly died out in America in the 1920s, and is still considered threatened due to the small numbers that exist today. Through the efforts of the Livestock Conservancy, the Leicester Longwools’ numbers will grow over time and we hope to be a part of that growth. Their fleece generally weights from 11-18 lbs., typically has an even length with a spiral tipped staple. It is sought after by hand spinners, knitters, and crafters due to its luster and beauty.

The goal when starting this farm was to bring life back to land that needed a purpose, and that this small foundational flock would produce yarn that would become part of the community of fiber lovers everywhere. That hope has turned into reality and both of our breeds are producing gorgeous fleeces that are being processed into yarn right here in the State of Maine. We support our local growers, producers, and manufactures, and are happy to know that support makes a difference to other small businesses in our State.

Every purchase of yarn, pottery, or tote bags directly supports other small businesses and the health and wellbeing of our flock. We thank you for that support!
